Single, You Need Individual Health Insurance
Even if you are single it is still necessary to have a good health insurance policy. In the past it was usually covered by your workplace but over the years many companies have faded out group health insurance. Most companies now that do still offer group coverage for their employees make it necessary for the employees to pay the premiums and many single people opt out of the insurance to save money. There are better ways to save money than doing without necessary health insurance, however. Since over 18,000 deaths a year are attributed to a lack of Medicare it is obviously an item of great importance.
If you are single, have no children, and no pre-existing medical problems many companies offer low cost health coverage that is very affordable. Those policies often have a high deductible but many single men and women feel that is a good way to compensate for a lower monthly payment. There are several factors that will influence the cost of your premiums from one place to the next such as state regulations, and geographic location.
When you are comparing different companies and policies make sure the coverage you select fits your desires. Many of these companies plans are more geared toward keeping you healthy than providing coverage when you do get sick. If you are not the type of person to take advantage of 'well care' doctor visits those plans will not be of great benefit to you. The most common types of coverage are HMO and PPO. There are also IPA and POS (individual practice association, and point of service plans). Rather than letting the type of insurance confuse you it is better to study what each plan has in its details in order to make your decision based on what you desire.
Here are a few things to consider when choosing a single health care plan:
• Find out what other policy holders think of their plans. Many companies have testimonials on their site.
• Make sure the company offering your chosen health care policy is accredited, like Blue Cross Blue Shield
• If you have a doctor and/or hospital you prefer make sure they are covered with that plan.
• Make sure you completely understand all of the details included in the coverage such as what is covered, how much of the cost is covered, and how care will be provided.
