Important Information on Philips Defibrillators
The Philips Heart Start Home Defibrillator is a small and lightweight AED (Automated External Defibrillator) designed for home use and does not require a prescription. It weighs just over three pounds and can be carried on a person’s side very easily. An AED is an automatic device that is used to bring back the normal heart rhythm to a patient who is in cardiac arrest. It examines the heart’s rhythm of the patient and advises whether or not a shock to the heart is required. If the heart begins to beat normally again with the defibrillator, the heart is said to have been defibrillated.
The Heart Start is powered by batteries and sends an external electric shock through the chest to restore a regular heart rhythm. It is used to treat cardiac arrest usually caused by ventricular fibrillation. This happens when the signals in the lower part of the heart are ineffective, not working together and little blood is being pumped. If ventricular fibrillation is not treated; the outcome may be death.
When it is on, a voice will lead you through the instructions on how to affix the pads and use it. The Heart Start is very easy to use. Two pads are connected to the device and then attached to the skin. The rhythm of the heart is examined through the pads to determine cardiac arrest and if the heart needs to be shocked into regular rhythm. The device also gives coaching on the procedures for CPR if needed.
The Heart Start is used on an adult or child who:
• Is older than 8 years old
• Is suddenly in cardiac arrest
• Does not have normal breathing
• Weight 55 pounds or more
• When shaken, will not respond
The Heart Start Defibrillator is the most proven and many studies state its effectiveness. It has very little side effects and will supply the powerful therapy needed with the first shock. Every Philips Heart Start Defibrillator has to go through a 120 point inspection before it can leave the factory. It does self-tests every day, more than 80 different test, including tests on the pads.
The design of the defibrillator has been made for the use at home. Before anyone uses it, it is recommended that CPR training is completed. There are special pads that are used for children and infants and should not be used on anyone who is breathing or responsive.
